Hand, memory, line.

Joshua Martin grew up in and around his father Terry’s shaping room. His first job was as the “clean-up kid” at the old Hobie factory in Capistrano Beach. From sweeping dust he moved to cutting and foiling fins — learning to shape on a smaller scale.

In the late 1980s he began shaping full-time at Just Add Water Surfboards in Laguna Canyon. An order for several hundred identical boards, each shaped by hand, gave him a production discipline that has since become muscle memory.

He chose to stay with that traditional craft. Every board remains functional art: drawn for a wave, a way of surfing and the person who will carry it into the water.
